Tempo Training

The tempo IS the load.

A tempo prescription is four digits: seconds down, pause at the bottom, seconds up, pause at the top. 4010 means a four-second lowering, no pause, lift in one, go again. An X means explode — move the bar as fast as it will go.

Tempo turns the same weight into a different exercise. A five-second eccentric at 60% produces more muscle damage, more control and more time under tension than a heavier set dropped through gravity. It is the cheapest intensity technique in the gym: no equipment, no spotter, just honesty.

And it is self-policing. If the eccentric breaks down, so has the weight — the tempo is the honesty check no ego survives.

How it works

  1. 1Read the four digits: eccentric, bottom pause, concentric, top pause.
  2. 2Count honestly — a real four-second eccentric is longer than you think.
  3. 3X-tempo means maximal intent: if bar speed dies, the set is over.
  4. 4When the prescribed tempo becomes impossible, the set is done regardless of the rep target.

In the app

  • PRESZN prints the tempo on every lift that carries one, from GBC's five-second eccentrics to Triphasic's phase-specific prescriptions.
  • Double Days runs a full tempo block before its two-a-day volume arrives; GVT holds 4010 across all ten sets of ten.
  • Because effort is scored from what you actually lift, slowing the tempo and dropping the load never costs you — the app races you against your own average, not the leaderboard's.

PRESZN is in private beta — ask the friend who sent you this for a TestFlight invite.

Questions

What does 30X0 tempo mean?

Three seconds down, no pause, explode up, no pause at the top. The X is intent: the bar may move slowly because the weight is heavy, but you are trying to move it fast.

Does tempo training build strength?

It builds the qualities strength stands on — tissue tolerance, positional control, and comfort under load. Triphasic training loads six-second eccentrics precisely because the eccentric phase is where athletic movements are won.

Should the load drop when tempo is prescribed?

Yes, and that is the design. A strict 4010 at 60% out-stimulates a sloppy heave at 75%. The tempo is the load.
