Escalating Density Training is Charley Staley's brutally simple idea: instead of counting sets and resting by feel, you fix a block of time — a PR zone — and try to do more total work inside it than you did last time.
A zone pairs two opposing exercises on one 15-minute clock. You alternate small, submaximal mini-sets — never to failure — resting only as long as the next set demands. When the buzzer goes, your score is the total reps across the pair. Density, work per minute, is the progression.
How it works
- 1Pick two non-competing lifts (a press and a row; a squat pattern and a curl).
- 2Set the clock — 15 minutes is the classic zone.
- 3Alternate mini-sets of roughly half your max reps. Early sets feel easy. That is correct.
- 4When the buzzer goes, total reps across both lifts is your score.
- 5Next session, beat the score. When you beat it by 20%, the load goes up 5%.
In the app
- —PRESZN runs the whole zone: the clock, the alternating lifts, the mini-set counts and the live rep total — no maths mid-set.
- —Every zone is scored against your own 28-day line for that exercise pairing and duration. Beat your line, take the point. A first-ever pairing that does real work to the buzzer debuts on the scoreboard.
- —Beat last week's score by 20% and the app moves your prescribed load up 5% — the progression rule enforces itself.

Questions
Is EDT good for building muscle?
Yes — density work drives a large volume of quality reps in a short time, which is a potent hypertrophy stimulus. It also builds work capacity that makes every other program more productive.
Why never train to failure in a zone?
Failure destroys density. A ground-out set forces long rests and steals reps from the rest of the zone. Small crisp sets, repeated relentlessly, always out-score heroics.
How heavy should the lifts be?
WORK RATE sets zones from your rep maxes — 8RM for the heavy zone, 10RM middle, 12RM finisher — and starts mini-sets at about half those reps.
